When Twilight author Stephenie Meyer first announced a new supernatural TV series in the works called The Rook, some wondered if this might be related, somehow, to her enormously popular vampire and werewolf romances. Chess, after all, was such a beloved past-time of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan that they even played it on their honeymoon. But Starz announced Friday at the Summer Television Critics Association Press Tour that the new series, which will premiere in 2018, is based on the 2012 novel by Daniel O’Malley. But that doesn’t mean it’s vampire-free.
Meyer will co-executive produce the series which follows a young woman being chased by “shadowy paranormal adversaries” and coming to terms with her own emerging abilities. Night Manager executive producer Stephen Garrett will serve as The Rook’s showrunner so look for an extra emphasis on espionage-style thrills.
