Performers working at Leicester’s Curve theatre have raised concerns about their safety because of a nearby ‘dark and threatening’ churchyard.
Theatre bosses say artists have been mugged and verbally abused while passing through the St George’s Churchyard which sits across Orton Square opposite Curve.
Actor’s union Equity has also raised concerns about the security of its members in the area.
The issue was raised at a Leicester City Council planning meeting during a debate about whether 21 healthy trees around the church should be felled.
The churchyard is often used as a short cut from the rail station to the Cultural Quarter.
The council says it wants to make the gloomy area around the 200 year-old Grade II* listed church more open and inviting by taking out some of the mature trees.
Deputy mayor councillor Adam Clarke was making the case for the £900,000 project and told committee members it had the backing of Curve, the Phoenix and the LCB depot.
